Demetria Estate - A Hidden Jewel In Central California.

Updated: May 5, 2018

Perched on top of a hill above Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez valley, Demetria is more than a winery. It ranks high on the list of the most beautiful places we have ever visited. With two winery dogs and (at least) four cats roaming the property, Demetria is pet friendly, but make sure to call in advance, and always keep your pooch on the leash.

Pika, enjoying the gorgeous views from the patio.

Demetria is only accessible by appointment and via a private, winding road with spectacular views. (To request an appointment, email inquiries@demetriaestate.com or call 805.686.2345.)

Make sure to bring snacks, or even a picnic basket, because you’ll want to soak in the views and stay a while. (Demetria doesn’t sell food).

Gravy, the winery dog, begging for food :)

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Gravy, the friendly winery dog. The space itself is very dog-friendly, with an enormous (and shaded) outside porch/patio area, where most wine-tastings take place. Pika spent most of her time digging around in the dirt, begging for food together with Gravy, or sleeping on the chair next to me.

Biodynamic winemaking

What first drew us to Demetria was their commitment to biodynamic practices. You can find out more about what this means here, but in short – it means going one step further from organic winemaking. In addition to not using any pesticides or fertilizers in the vineyards, Demetria also farms by the moon phases, and handles wine minimally in the cellar. As a result of this traditional form of agriculture, Demetria wines are pure, never leave you feeling groggy the next day, and are relatively low in alcohol. (Needless to say they are delicious, and we are very happy wine-club members).

Our favorite Demetria wines:

2017 GRENACHE ROSÉ *

The 2016 vintage won "Year's Best Rosé" by Wine & Spirits Magazine, and we could not agree more. Our to-go rosé at all occasions. Floral notes, hints of rhubarb, and a pale pink-peach color.

$29

2016 SPARKLING ROSÉ

Light-bodied and pale in color, with hints of roses, strawberries and a long finish. 100% Grenache, and perfect for just about any occasion.

$60

2016 BETON BLANC

If you’re not familiar with the Picpoul Blanc grape variety, you’re in for a treat. This wine offers everything from honeydew to lemon and apples on the palate, along with a high acidity perfect for shellfish pairing!
